About Orthodontics in San Antonio, TX

Why choose orthodontic treatment?

There are two main reasons to seek orthodontic treatment: bite problems and teeth misalignment. Teeth that are protruding, erupting out of position, or overcrowded are common indications that treatment is needed. Less obvious signs include mouth breathing, frequent biting of the cheek or palate, speech difficulties, and thumb sucking that goes past the age of three to four years of age. Other signs of orthodontic problems include jaw clicking, and your teeth not meeting when you close your mouth.

Treatment Timing

The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends children get their first checkup with an AAO orthodontist like Dr. Ajanaku either at the first recognition of an orthodontic problem or at age seven.

At this age, children have a mix of baby (primary) and permanent teeth. An examination at this age gives Dr. Ajanaku a wealth of information. If a problem exists, or if one is developing, he can advise you on which treatment is recommended, when it should begin, and estimate its length.

If necessary, Dr. Ajanaku may recommend two-phase treatment. Phase 1 focuses on addressing major concerns when baby teeth are present, such as protruding teeth and jaw issues. Phase 2 works solely on adult teeth. Once your child loses their last baby tooth and their permanent teeth have grown in, Dr. Ajanaku will inspect their teeth and evaluate how best to complete their dental corrections.
